Polyglot and linguist Matthew Youlden explains easy steps to learning a new language and debunks popular myths about language learning.

Languages have shaped Matthew’s entire life, from learning languages as a child with his twin brother (www.superpolyglotbros.com) to later being Babbel’s Language Ambassador and working as a lecturer. Having already studied over 20 languages, Matthew’s mission is to share his joy of languages. He truly believes that with the right tools and a healthy dose of fun, anyone can easily learn a new language. matthewyoulden.com.

I was learning German maybe 8 years ago, could be 10. In order to learn words I used to write small notes with the words and put them everywhere (on the objects that they represent) now, 8 years later I picked up German again, and without using the language at all during all these years I still remember words and phrases. I guess I repeated them enough times so they could lodge into my long-term memory. When I picked it up again I was able to just recall the words without even trying to recall them (I didn't know they were still there, in my mind). They were just somewhere there in a shelf inside my brain. I was really surprised because I've heard that if you don't use the language you forget it. Keep in mind I learned it about a month 8-10 years ago. So, yeah, repetition in the thing with languages. As the guy said surround yourself with the language. I find learning a new language fun and I love it. It's never boring to me. Also while learning say out loud the words and phrases, speak, so you could use all your senses.

There is something in that... But he has some points too. I think noone can reasonably expect learning a new language in a week or in a month... Except they are really good at learning languages, very motivated, and they spend a lot of time daily to learn that language. If someone only learns for half hour a day, that's for long term goals, but then, language learning takes at least 1-2 years with the half hour method. For rapid learning (e g. Conversation level in 3 months), one has to study several hours a day(like, 8 hours), and then practice it a lot so that one does not forget it just as swiftly as they learned it. The term fluently is also tricky: for me, you speak a language fluently if you can write and converse about almost any topic in that language, and understand movies, videos without subtitle. That takes years, for most people. But, as I said, he has some points: motivation is very important in learning a language, and if you start with "I cannot ever learn this" - then this will very likely come through. The half hour method is also an easy and convenient way to learn. But one should not expect too much, like, for an average person learning Turkish in one week... That is an almost impossible goal. Even a very talented student can only learn the absolute basics in that time, I would not say that would amount to fluently speaking a language. But these polyglots do gave me some hope, tgat I might be able to learn another one or two languages. I am Hungarian and I speak German and English on a decent level, althrough I am better in German than in English (my pronunciation is not so good in English). Now I started to learn Italian. But this because I speak German since ages and English also since more than 15 years... Now it's time for another language. But I expect I will have to learn it for 2-4 years to speak fluently,or reasonably well, since now I don't have much time for studying.
